12/10/2019 Salt, Salt, SaltSalt was developed before Christ and it played critical role in ancient war time. Since then, salt has been used for various applications other than for food. Currently global salt demand is about 330Mt per year and 153Mt, 46% is consumed in Asia. Many of them are locally produced in each region and seaborne traded salt which is dealt by mode of sea transportation is circa 27Mt in Asia. What is salt used for? Applications of salt in Asia are divided into 5 categories, use for Chlor-Alkali plants (CA) is 47%, consuming most volume. 2nd is 26% for soda ash production mainly in China. Lastly food and food processing application like instant noodle production is 12%. In general, demand growth of salt for food is proportional to population growth. About 88% of salt is actually used for industrial applications and demand is showing organic growth according to growth of various application in construction and infrastructure industries.
