what is salt?

Most people probably think of salt as simply that white granular seasoning found in saltshakers on virtually every dining table.

The origin of the word, "salt" goes back to 6050 BC. Salt was used as a part of Egyptian religious offerings and means of trade among Mediterranean empire. Prior to industrialization, it was extremely expensive and labor-intensive to harvest the mass quantities of salt necessary for food preservation and seasoning. This made salt an extremely valuable commodity. Entire economies were based on salt production and trade. The word "salary" was also believed to be derived from the word "salt."

Besides food applications, nowadays salt is being used in various industrial applications such as chlor alkali producers and soda ash manufacturers, which play critical role of modern industrialization.
