Salt Is Not Only For FoodWhen people hear about salt, most of us first imagine about table salt. However, the largest application of salt is for chemical plants called “Chlor-Alkali Plants” where they use electrolysis process to produce caustic soda and chlorine. This application is 36% of total global salt demand and 49% of salt demand in Asia. The second largest application is for “soda ash” which is used for glass production. Salt for food is around 10% in the total salt application.

What Do CHLOR ALKALI Plants Make?Pure brine made of salt is used as feedstock for electrolysis process to produce caustic soda, chlorine and hydrogen gas. The process chart is put below. Chlorine is used in the manufacture of paints and epoxies; PVC is used to make pipes, tubing, electrical insulation and other construction materials. Caustic soda is used in industrial activities such as water treatment and pulp and paper and chemical manufacturing. Caustic soda is also used to make soaps, detergents, soft tissues, absorbent materials and cleaning supplies. Caustic soda and chlorine are created as co-products by chlor-alkali plants. Because chlorine is difficult to store, chlor-alkali plants run their plants based on demand for chlorine. As a result, when chlorine demand is high, chlor-alkali plants will raise production rates, potentially flooding the market with caustic soda. When chlorine demand is low, the plants will lower production rates, potentially restricting supplies of caustic soda. |
